This fine inside painted snuff bottle depicts a continuous scene of twelve magpies clustered among dense leafy patches of flowering lotus. Twelve magpies symbolize a wish for happiness throughout all the hours of the day as the Chinese traditional hour is equivalent to two Western hours. Chen Zhongsan is one of the best of Beijing Middle School artists. His working period was between 1907-1919, and his works are rare. This is the only recorded example of this subject and ranks as one of the artist’s best painted and most inventive works. The stopper is made of coral with a small pearl. Real Size: 6.4 x 3.8 cm
