This fine inside painted snuff bottle depicts a charming landscape scene in which a standing ox watches over a sleeping boy bent over a tree trunk. Poet Lu Hsun (1881–1936), once wrote: “Fierce–browed, I coolly defy a thousand pointing fingers; Head bowed, like a willing ox I serve the children,” which fully expresses the ox’s absolute loyalty to the people. The artist, Yan Yutian (1870-1949), was active between ca. 1894-1919. He is believed to be a Manchu, but little is known of his life. He painted with a predominantly brown and grey palette, and most of his subjects are landscapes, still lifes, insects and birds. Yan dated most of his bottles either to 1895 or 1907; only a few are known dated 1898.
Height of this bottle: 5.7 cm
