This landscape image depicts a continuous scene of carps and goldfish swimming among water weeds, inscribed Longmen De Yi = Satisfied at the Dragon Gate, signed by Meng Zishou and followed by a seal Zishou, in Beijing in the year renzi (1912).
Fish appear to swim happily in their surroundings, making them symbols of connubial bliss. Because they spawn many eggs, they also symbolize fecundity. The carp is the fish associated with motifs for passing the civil service examinations. According to traditional belief, carp swimming upstream in the Yellow River must leap the rapids of Dragon’s Gate; the first carp to succeed in doing this transformed itself into a dragon. This tale is a metaphor for a poor scholar who passes the civil service exams and becomes a high official. Height of the original snuff bottle: 6.6 cm
